IC Information
Name: Nageki Fujishiro
Canon: Hatoful Boyfriend
Gender: Male
Age: As of present day, technically over 21, but when he died, he was 16.
History: Hatoful Boyfriend, which has a wiki right here, isn't very comprehensive, and as such, I have a VERY SPOILERY history write-up that way which will go over pretty much all the points in detail in relation to the ghost birdie. Just in case, y'know. ... It's a lot so I don't want to clog the app unnecessarily. Shuu Iwamine's entry also details some info on Nageki, just in case.
Personality:
"Mourning dove". It's a name that implies they're mourning something, and Nageki certainly fits his name. But it's inaccurate to say he's mourning anything. Certainly not himself. But perhaps, quietly, to himself, he's mourning. Mourning the extreme loss of life that's surrounded his short, quiet one. A lot has gone on in his life, you see. Maybe it's why he's such a quiet bird, as a result.

At the beginning of everything, Nageki is the quietest of the bird bachelors in Hatoful Boyfriend. There's a mysterious air about him and a sort of sad feeling to everything he does. This is because, mourning dove jokes aside, he has had a tragic and sad life. It has also been a short one due to his taking it to stop the Charon Virus from spreading, thus, he does not easily speak to strangers. Hell, he isn't even used to anybirdie seeing him! That alone will get some shock out of him. So it's easy to see one of the reasons Nageki is so poor with socializing; he hasn't made many friends, and almost anyone he comes into contact with either dies or has some horrible misfortune befall them. It's easy to look at Nageki and pass him by, even. He's said it himself: "You're thinking I have no presence, right?" It's true--he doesn't. Ghosts normally don't! You'll usually find Nageki in a dark corner of the library, making friends with a good book. He enjoys books more than anything, as he's always hungry for knowledge of the world he just couldn't be a part of due to his sudden demise or his illness. He makes friends with the books around him, always eager to learn. Nageki is a bird who is seen and not heard, so to speak.

He's not particularly good at being forceful, either, so that doesn't help his case much. Even with Hiyoko, who bothered him at first, all he managed was to tell her to go away. But he doesn't really act on those words, and she continues hanging around. He doesn't stop her. He caves to pressure most of the time, and is rather easy to bully into doing things because he isn't sure how to speak up or really... defend himself, at times. And he doesn't really see a point in it, either. Why bother when the only person who could see him was Hiyoko? That said, sometimes, he can't help being nothing short of sarcastic and sardonic when dealing with some people. He doesn't like suffering stupidity, most times. You could say he can be a bit... antisocial.

For the longest time, Nageki lived in solitude, thinking this sort of way, and thus, he is used to keeping things to himself. He... does not honestly understand having friends or the outside world much. The only person whom he really knows anymore is Hitori, and it takes a long time for Nageki to open up to someone. He's quiet, he keeps to himself, and although he is a very intelligent boy, everything he does has a sort of... mute tone to it. He never does anything with much force or very loudly. Perhaps that is because there has been far too much force and loudness in his life. From the time the humans killed his friends one by one, to the times when he saw them only in front of him as screaming prisoners, slowly dying of sickness, Nageki has seen death. Time and time again, the small dove has seen everything around him die, or get hurt, for no real discernibly good reason.

And yet... he doesn't resent it, most of the time.

... He knows death is natural.

So that's okay. It's unnatural death he takes problem with. Nageki is frail and weak, but he isn't weak-willed. Not anymore, at least; this changed over the course of the games. Hiyoko helped him come out of his shell, showing us new sides to him. When it comes to doing something, he can be rather determined, if in a sort of stoic way. He will do whatever he must for those he cares about, even if that means sacrificing himself. He wants to prevent anyone from hurting more people, from taking more lives. He hates pointless violence and wastes of life. That said, he's definitely not a physical fighter. He prefers using his words to fight, his mind. On that note, you might say Nageki suffers from martyr syndrome: that is, he is willing to sacrifice himself over and over again for the sake of others so that they may live on, happily. He's been used for bad so much that he cannot stand the thought of any more death in the world. Even if he knows people (and birds) die, that doesn't mean he has to like it. Nor does it mean he'll try to let it happen, if he can help it, and if he knows about it.

Unfortunately, people continue to die because of him in canon even after his untimely demise, five years past it, even. ... And the mourning dove has a tendency to blame himself for all the things that go wrong. More often than not, that is because he is, at base, at fault. After all, the Charon Virus that Shuu used to kill Hiyoko came from his body. Not even killing himself, making himself disappear, would fix it, and he regrets that immensely. Nageki had seen so much death that he is honestly traumatized at the thought of it. Simply be another human breathing the very same air as him, they would die. The result has probably left him concerned around most humans, even if he hides it well. Hiyoko has to earn his trust, but by that point his memories had begun to fade, thus making him forget why he was so worried in the first place. Now that he remembers, it's pretty likely Nageki has some insecurity about interaction with most others. That is, he's worried, deep down, people will get hurt around him. A valid fear, given his poor luck.

One can say he's been through a lot, and that this, too, has only added to the nature of how he keeps to himself and what little he says. Nageki isn't selfish, in the least: he cares about others, and humans, in general. He cares deeply for Hiyoko and is hurt when he speaks to her spirit. In his route, it is Hiyoko who opens up to him that allows him to finally rest without any regrets left. For those that are his friends, he would willing allow himself to be hurt. But there are many things he also realizes he cannot stop, and sadly, Nageki has an easy time resigning to those things, such as disappearing from Hiyoko's life because his clock finally "started" again. He has tried to accept what he cannot change, and change what he cannot accept if possible.

However, the canon AUs, such as Holiday Star's many ones, and the manga, show us a side of Nageki we seldom see. He has a deep love for the stars and exploration, and CAN take charge when he has the right people or cause around him, as shown when he confronts the King all by himself. He quite enjoys fairy tales and the like. He is shown to be a courteous, kind, caring youth, doing what he can when he can. It's through helping others in dreams and the like, or through those that can see him (the rare few) that he's made a few very precious, living friends. In fact, we see that people such as Anghel can see him, and despite his craziness, Nageki appears to be friends with the odd, manga-loving bleeding heart luzon. Nageki, deep down, is a bit friendlier than he at first seems, and obviously wants to be able to fit in and talk and DO things with everybirdie else. It's just that his life didn't allow this. It is especially hard when he became so lost years after his death, unable to even remember why he haunted the school's library in the first place, or even that he was dead.

Though, on the subject of noise and chaos... he doesn't tolerate the defacing or harming of books in any way, and cannot stand people who yell a lot in the library. Sakuya has been the victim of more than one book to the head, as seen in both the drama CD and the manga, both for his endlessly loud bravado and also his defacing of books in an attempt to disprove theories and rumors about the school. Nageki does not take kindly to either of these things, and he's always reminding people to keep their voices down in the library. Nageki wishes the library in the school was better-stocked, however, and probably would have appreciated Sakuya getting more for it, if he had. ... Still, in HoliStar, we see that even when given the chance to move on, Nageki is reluctant. He still has earthly ties; he cares for his friends, and refuses to simply abandon them right away. He prefers to do things on his own terms, to the last moment. That's just how he is. It's probably due to the lack of control he had during his life.

It's true that, if you talk to him about his interests, such as the stars or novels and such, he's a lot likelier to open up, and is more comfortable doing so; he has a harder time speaking to loud, outgoing people who don't know how to be quiet and such. Still, even if he's a bit introverted and prefers not being the conversation focus most times, Nageki is a good listener, and will try to help you with your problems if he can. In all, even if he's a bit sad and quiet, he's a sweet bird, deep down, who cares a lot about others and their happiness, and just wants a better world.

Powers/Abilities: Nageki is a normal bird in most fronts; he has no physical strengths to speak of. He's just one bird who was formerly quite sickly, after all. He can fly, though, for what that's worth, but doesn't do it often, mostly because it's taxing. Same with most physical exertion. The only unusual things he was capable of in life, really, was the immediate murder of humans via internal organ failure due to a modified form of the virus present in his body. After his death, however, he is shown to be capable of possessing people if only briefly, moving objects around, even breaking down doors. (He possesses Hiyoko on at least one occasion, and Ryouta on another.) Otherwise, however, he cannot do much. He is hampered by his poor health in life, after all. And it isn't unusual for a dove to be able to fly, or do all the things a human can do in Hatoful Boyfriend; all birds can read books or use computers, after all.

Keepsakes/Mementos: I'll list this in bullet format. Honestly he doesn't have much since he's been a ghost for awhile, and he didn't keep much in life, but I WILL TRY.

• The most important thing is a "encyclopedia" volume containing numerous documents detailing Nageki's upkeep and time in the St. Pigeonations Medical Center, as well as the details of Operation Hatoful.
• A picture of him and Hitori together.
• A book, "Night on the Galactic Railroad".
• Maybe Hitori's scarf? He's shown wearing it on a few occasions.
• Same for any objects the kids at the orphanage might of had, or maybe feathers from them. He wouldn't have had any in life, but it's an idea.
• Country Millet is super important to Nageki and holds fond memories of him and his family, so that's also an option.
• If you want to be especially silly, maybe the OreHato light novel series Hiyoko tried to make him read.
• Basically any objects pertaining to his friends; feathers from all of them are also possible. (In Sakuya's case, perhaps his ribbon; Anghel's cross, maybe Ryouta's flower accessory for his head when he crossdresses?)
• Nageki himself is usually portrayed as wearing a green tie.

... Yeah I really can't think of much, wow.

A broken clock... cannot continue to count the seconds that pass. The minutes, the hours, the days... the weeks...

A broken clock. That was what his life had become. ... No, not life. Death. His death. His lingering, here, in this awful, awful school. But... it wasn't so awful anymore, perhaps. Why was this? Why did it no longer hold the pain and terorr to him it once did? Nageki glanced down and around the large cold storage room around him. A rock dove bearing scars from a recent surgery. A large, metal creature with a burlap sack for a head, splayed on the floor. He was... guarding them, as they dreamed, he supposed. And sometimes, when he too would sleep, they would dream together.

It had, in truth, been a better time than his afterlife had originally begun. They dreamed collectively together, in the times when Nageki's spirit needed rest. Even spirits needed to recharge, so to speak.

But the clock did not move. Not yet. This was his duty. They were not safe yet. Not to be awakened yet.

And so, frozen, in more ways than one, they dreamed. Exchanging stories and ideas about how things might have gone differently, had she not died, had he not died. What if she'd become a secret agent with Mister Sakazaki? That kind of thing. Eventually, their activities ceased, and he was left to quietly watch over the two of them. Both... had been put through far too much... mostly because of him. This was... he felt responsible for them both, as if both were his fault, for failing to destroy his body. He thought the time would never come, and it seemed like centuries had passed before he heard familiar voices outside their cold, quiet room. The room he'd been guarding, so carefully.

Frozen, like his clock. He waited. And waited.

... And then a crack of light, and a distant voice he couldn't quite make out. But it was familiar. Snooty, would be the word he'd use... followed by concerned. They were finally here. The cold door cracked open just a bit more. Quietly, he tried to rouse them; it did not work. They remained asleep. But they had to wake up. It was time for them to go. Time for their clocks to continue, renewed, lively. Not like his broken one.

Hiyoko had tried to ask him things. She had worried. She always worried. They could communicate, still, in a way. He could talk to her spirit. It was easy enough. ... What about him, she had asked. ... Well, what about him? He was dead. He had no place here any longer, he felt.

A broken clock, after all, that could not be repaired, was useless. Ryouta was still asleep. The bird glanced at not the cold steel scarecrow, but the spirit residing within her. The true Hiyoko Tousaka. ... And he smiled gently. No... it was right. This was right. It only felt right, that they continue to live the lives they'd had robbed of them.

I cannot, Miss Tousaka. ... I'm sorry.

She seemed sad, but he decided to elaborate. She had to let him go. They all did.

The future... the hands of both your clocks... is in your own. I... think I will... rest, myself. It's true. Nageki was quite tired, tired of all that had happened from his life, and his afterlife. He feared overstaying his welcome much longer; what if he became something unrecognizable? Filled with hatred or something, like out of a bad horror novel? He didn't want that. So, as usual, he decided he wanted to leave on his own terms. He would only ever do things on his own terms, in this way, even if the choice was difficult... he hated not having control. He usually didn't. So, when it came to him being able to make his own choices... this was his. When they'd been roused, and in Hiyoko's case, escorted away, Nageki was left alone. ... Someone lingered inside the room, though. Someone he had missed, in the chaos of the others getting Hiyoko and Ryouta out.

His brother was there. But he could not see him. Even so, he had to wonder if some part of him was hallucinating it. ... Ridiculous. He's a spirit. What could he even hallucinate? It had to be him. Well... even if he was...

Hitori... I'm sorry. Please... be happy. Live. A voice filled with love, and a bit of sorrow.

Tick. A single tick, after an eon of silence. Live. If he closed his eyes, Nageki could remember, just faintly, the feeling of his former death. A sea of flames. Loud alarms throughout the underground research facility blaring. A locked room. Smoke quickly clogging and filling his small, frail, unhealthy lungs. And Hitori, beating on the door, screaming. His wish... his wish, as his clock had ceased--

Tock.

Live, Hitori. Live for yourself. Not just for me. That was his wish. For his brother to be happy. ... For Hiyoko and Ryouta, too. For all of his friends to... be... happy.

That was all Nageki had ever asked. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. ... Slowly, the ticking in his mind got louder, and turned to a thump. Thump thump thump.

(What was thumping...?)

And with that, he began to feel a warm pull, somewhere. It wasn't like the pull of the flames he'd felt before, though; this was different. It wasn't painful heat searing his feathers off and cooking him inside and out. ... Being dead for years... he hadn't felt warmth in such a long time. Time... time.

A thump. The clock had finally begun to move. Was it time? Time to finally depart into the stars? ... He... hoped so. He could hear the distant sounds of a train, calling to him. Of a conductor... perhaps of more. Everything slowly faded into a bright, warm light. It was time for him to go. And he was... all right with that. Finally, all that had been wrong, had been set right. He had... finished what he'd started. The world knew the truth. It was safer. Humans and birds... would begin to heal. To get along. That... made him the happiest, in hindsight. Knowing that fact. And so he smiled gently, and accepted his soul into whatever awaited him, with no trepidation. It was only right. It was time, his clock had begun to move once more...

Mindset:

Nageki reacts quietly to most things, keeping his thoughts internal; to himself. Except for a scathingly sarcastic remark or two, of course. If he sees something horrifying, his eyes might widen, but he's a subdued sort. Not the type to scream. He remembers his death fully, one hundred percent, because he killed himself using fire, after all. (Doesn't mean he ENJOYED it, though.) He tends to react calmly and collectedly, trying to problem solve. He doesn't believe in rushing things unless necessary. He's liable to believe it's the afterlife, though--as logical as he seems, he's also very open to the supernatural and the like, and quite accepting of it. Probably because of how much time he spent as a ghost, himself. So in order to truly panic him, I think something like fire or hurting people he cares for or innocents might be involved. The only time he'd ever really panic would be if the Charon Virus got involved.

G̶̶l̨͡i̵͢t̷c͝͠h̕é͠s̷ :

As I mentioned above, I think Nageki's biggest fears would be others being hurt because of him, emotionally or otherwise. Due to the Charon Virus and him being used as a biological weapon against humans, I think his biggest fear might be him killing others just by being in the same SPACE as them, particularly humans. He's afraid of being used for ill, of being a danger or burden to others. He's afraid, to a small extent, of attachment for the same reason. He feels he might only hurt people, or burden them. He was never healthy, so I think he fears going back to his body being that useless and unhelpful again, too. And, of course, how he died... the fire. He's got a bit of a thing against fire due to his suicide by it; it wasn't pleasant, or quick, by any means. This is unconfirmed, but I'd also suspect he dislikes needles and drugs since Shuu Iwamine used a lot on him and he later found out all of them were unpleasantly for the Virus to GROW. Another thing, I think, is he'd be afraid of not being seen or heard again, like he had been at the school for some time, and of being trapped in one room or place, unable to do anything about it or leave. He's quiet, but that doesn't mean he wants to be silenced. He probably also fears becoming something hideously, paranormally unrecognizable, of losing all his memories and sense of self and feeling, which almost happens until Hiyoko and a few others begin to aid him.

He's also pretty haunted by how Hiyoko was killed by the virus from him that was implanted into Ryouta, how she was turned into a horrific scarecrow thing after being dissected and cut apart by Shuu. That's also a good avenue to take if you really want him to freak out, haha. He also didn't like how Shuu basically brainwashed poor Ryouta into becoming a mindless, numb, human-killing machine, briefly. He hates the idea of people's free will being removed. (Honestly pretty much anything Shuu does is horrifying.) Guns and human extremists against birdkind might also be an option, given what happened at the orphanage he was in.

(Sidenote, in case you modly mods need it: for the Charon Virus, in case you needed info, it... basically dissolves the lung tissue rapidly, apparently? This was in the guidebook.)
